                                               PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION



 DESCRIPTION OF TOWN

- SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION


LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE OLD WORLD, ISTANBUL IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREAT CITIES. IT LIES
BOTH IN EUROPE AND ASIA. IT THEREFORE HAS A UNIQUE GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION WHICH GIVES IT
AN IMPORTANT INFLUENCE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, THE BLACK SEA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.
ISTANBUL IS THE ONLY CITY IN THE WORLD THAT BRIDGES TWO CONTINENTS. FOR MANY CENTURIES
IT WAS THE CAPITAL OF TWO GREAT EMPIRES, THE BYZANTINE AND THE OTTOMAN. ALTHOUGH
ANKARA BECAME THE CAPITAL IN 1922, ISTANBUL, WITH A POPULATION OF TEN MILLION, IS STILL
TURKEY'S BIGGEST CITY AND PORT, AND IS THE BUSINESS AND CULTURAL CENTRE OF THE COUNTRY.
FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, IT HAS BEEN AT THE CROSSROADS OF HISTORY AND MANY GREAT
CIVILISATIONS HAVE LEFT MAGNIFICENT MONUMENTS THERE.

THERE ARE A GREAT MANY MUSEUMS, PALACES AND PLACES FOR SIGHTSEEING SUCH AS THE TOPKAPI
PALACE, THE DOLMABAHÇE PALACE, THE HAGIA SOPHIA, THE ARCHAELOGICAL MUSEUM, THE MAIDEN’S
TOWER AND THE GALATA TOWER.
THE CITY OFFERS SOME SPORTS FACILITIES, WHICH YOU CAN EITHER JOIN AS A PLAYER OR JUST WATCH AS
AN AUDIENCE.
YOU CAN ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF THE ISTANBUL STRAIT THROUGH SOME BOAT TOURS, WHICH TAKES ABOUT
AN HOUR.
THE ISLANDS OF ISTANBUL ARE ALSO SOME OF THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL BEAUTIES OF THE CITY
WHICH YOU SHOULD CERTEAINLY SEE.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO ENJOY CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERTS, OPERA, BALLET AND THEATRES ORGANISED AT THE
ATATURK CULTURAL CENTRE, WHICH ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AT THE MUNICIPAL OR PRIVATE ONES.

 SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION

ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE CENTER WAS FOUNDED IN 2000 AND HAS BEEN OFFERING TURKISH
COURSES FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS AS WELL AS OTHER LANGUAGES ON DEMAND. THE CENTER ALSO OFFERS
ACADEMIC TURKISH COURSES NOT ONLY FOR THE STUDENTS OF ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY BUT ALSO FOR THE
STUDENTS OF OTHER UNIVERSITIES OR THE FOREIGN STUDENTS WHO WANT TO HAVE MA OR PHD DEGREE.
THE COURSES ARE AVAILABLE IN THREE SEMESTERS. THERE ARE 8 LECTURERS OF TURKISH.




 ACCOMMODATION

- SHORT DESCRIPTION OF LANGUAGE COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS



      STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE A “BEGINNERS” LEVEL OF TURKISH; STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO
      CONSTRUCT DIALOGUES NECESSARY FOR DAILY LIFE (GREETING, SHOPPING, SUGGESTING,
      APOLOGIZING, MEETING, ETC.), STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO GAIN RELEVANTS SKILLS DEFINED
      UNDER EUROPEAN LANGUAGE PORTFOLIO A1 LEVEL (SEE. TABLE 1). THE AIM IS TO LEARN SUFFICIENT
      LEVEL OF TURKISH THAT WOULD HELP TO COVER THE BASIC NEEDS IN THE TURKISH DAILY LIFE.

 INTRODUCTION TO TURKISH CULTURE IS AIMED, APART FROM THE LANGUAGE EDUCATION, CULTURAL
ACTIVITIES WILL BE ORGANIZED IN PARALEL TO THE COURSE PROGRAM. COURSE PARTICIPANTS WILL
ENGAGE IN OTHER ACTIVITIES WITH THE SUPERVISION OF OUR TURKISH LECTURERS. THERE WILL BE HELD
NUMEROUS SOCIAL EVENTS SUCH AS VISITS TO HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PLACES, FILM SCREENINGS ON
TURKISH CULTURE, SEMINARS INTRODUCING TURKISH MUSIC, GUIDED TOURS TO THE HISTORICAL AREAS IN
