A trial involving 752 patients with metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of ixabepilone in combination with capecitabine compared to capecitabine monotherapy. The median age at diagnosis was 61 years. * After age 40 years, white women have a higher incidence of breast cancer than black women, but black women are more likely to die from breast cancer at every age. * In 2007, an estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women, along with an estimated 62,030 cases of in situ breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, after lung cancer. * The death rate from breast cancer in women has decreased since 1990, a decrease attributed both to advances in treatment and to early detection.
