Abwehrzauber und Behexung: Studien zum Schadenzauberglauben im alten Mesopotamien

Chapter four abstracts the concepts underlying Mesopotamian black magic, exploring the variety of possible practitioners of sorcery as well as the spectrum of harm that they might bring about. Since manipulation of the cosmos with the aim of damaging another person was a very serious crime for the ancients, we have practically no direct evidence for its practice, although Schwemer does discuss a "voodoo doll" discovered at Tell ed-Der that had been thoroughly abused with spikes from a palm tree (pp. 212ff.)
