If it had been published as Wright intended, with its deleted second section titled "The Horror and the Glory," then Black Boy would have recounted his struggles as a black man in the US South and North. Because unlike Black Boy, American Hunger ends not with Wright being delivered into the optional-laden North, but with literature/writing as his only true redeemer.
