Problem-based learning: a joint UK pilot project history

The University of Bristol, University College London (UCL) and the University of Manchester have been working in partnership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to pilot the problem-based learning (PBL) teaching method in electrical and electronic engineering programmes. Ranked in order of preference, these key skills were: 1 Problem-solving skills 2 Computer literacy 3 Interpersonal skills 4 = Group working skills 4 = Numeracy skills 6 Written communications skills 7 Time management skills During the course of their investigations, the working party became aware of a course being run by the Medical Faculty at the University of Glasgow which was based almost entirely on problem-based learning.
