Healthcare financial managers want results, but they passionately want to understand how those results are achieved. Yet there is an outcome to all this process. Pitcher coach Johnny Sain had a phrase for that. He called it "the cool of the evening." That was the feeling a starting pitcher experienced when he had a good outing, knew he didn't have to pitch for another few days, and had time to enjoy the feeling of a job well done. For healthcare financial managers, "the cool of the evening" is knowing they have made a difference in the financial health of their organization, and thereby the physical health of their community.
