The invisible world, the world of corporate culture, is the new frontier. An entirely new species of creatures inhabits this world: strange and fascinating creatures like self-organization, emergence, increasing returns, nonlinear agent interactions, and fractals. These new intangible life forms are leading people to a new understanding of culture, its critical role in organizational performance, and the counter-intuitive formula for its amplification. Management science is way past its expiration date, based on a paradigm called machine view that is more than 400 years old. Machine view is incomplete and, left to its own devices, leads to the sub-optimization of people and companies. Given that the sweet spot of superperformance is found through the marriage of process and culture, here are some ways that individuals and organizations can use this knowledge to advance: 1. Institute the new paradigm of optimization. 2. Shore up quality. 3. Be a community builder. 4. Integrate cultural factors into performance scorecards. 5. Stay in the sweet spot.
