New work on plant sterols indicates they may contribute more than one-third of the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-lowering effects of the "portfolio" diet. Various dietary guidelines suggest patients use combinations of cholesterol-lowering dietary components, or a dietary portfolio, to reduce serum cholesterol. However, the contribution of the individual portfolio components such as soy protein, fiber, almonds, and plant sterols remains to be established.
