The news biz has gone through a world of radical changes since the author first set foot in a newsroom, many moons ago in the days before the term "online" was ever used as an adjective for "media." But some of the best stories still come to life the same way they always have. Dead-tree newspapers may be dying, but look at the proliferation of cable television channels with so many niche outlets that appeal to specialized audiences.
