"Given that there is currently no CARB-approved NOx aftertreatment, the only way to reduce fleet NOx is to retire machines," says [John Bartz]. "These old machines have the largest impact on NOx and likely need to be retired out of the fleet to meet this requirement. Re-power of old Tier 0 machines to Tier II or Tier III is technically very difficult, as this now affects the computer architecture of the engine and machine, with significant cooling system considerations."
