Skamania Lodge Executive Team FRANK J. CASAREZ General Manager Frank J. Casarez has been general manager at Skamania Lodge since January 2005. Casarez brings over twenty years of hotel management experience including positions with Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham International and Interstate Hotels Corporation. Prior to his current role as general manager, Casarez was the resort manager at Skamania Lodge since October 2003. From 2000 until 2003, Casarez was general manager at Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Portland, Ore. where he managed property operations. Previously, he worked for the Wyndham International Radisson Hotel as the assistant general manager for the Astrodome Convention Center in Houston, Texas. For more than a decade, Casarez held various managerial roles for Sheraton Hotels and Resorts including Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort (1985-89), Long Beach Hotel at Shoreline Square (1989-90), Los Angeles Airport Hotel (1990-91), Sheraton Harbor Island in San Diego (1991-93) and San Marcos Golf Resort and Conference Center (1994-96). Casarez has completed a broad range of advanced training programs including Radisson Hotels general manager certification, Cendant Corporations Hospitality Management Training Course, Park Lane Hotels Sales Skills Seminar, Interstate Hotel Corporations Professional Selling Skills and the course on Harmony Product Suite by Carlson Hospitality Worldwide. In 1990, Casarez was awarded the prestigious ITT Sheraton President’s Award. Casarez is active within the community and is currently a board member of both the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center and the Tax Advisory Board, both in Eastern Washington state. Previously, he served as a member of the Tri-County Lodging Organization and the Portland Business Alliance. Casarez played professional baseball from 1979 until 1981 with the San Francisco Giants and the Mexico City Tigers. A native of Santa Monica, Calif., Casarez attended Santa Monica Jr. College before transferring to San Diego State University on an athletic scholarship. He currently resides in Camas, Wash. with his wife Tamara, and their children, Tori and Kendal. GAIL PALEN Marketing Manager Gail Palen brings more than 20 years of sales, marketing and management experience to Skamania Lodge. Palen joined Skamania Lodge in 1999 as the market research manager and has since been promoted to tour and leisure sales manager and most recently marketing manager. Prior to joining Skamania Lodge, Palen was the corporate and sports sales manager of the Club Hotel by Doubletree in Boise, Idaho, where she assisted in special event planning and food and beverage functions. From 1992 to 1996, Palen was the executive director of the Nampa Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau in Nampa, Idaho. Palen was responsible for employee and financial management, human relations, advertising, marketing and public relations. Previously, Palen was the owner and manager of Applause Promotions where she directed marketing, advertising and public relations campaigns for the Southwestern Idaho Travel Association. In 1995 Palen received the Women in Business Advocate of the Year award. In addition, Applause Promotions received a 1989 award for Best Group Tour Direct Mail Campaign by the National Tour Association and Best Regional Advertising Campaign by the International Association of Conventions & Visitors Bureaus. Palen is active in the hospitality community with professional involvement in the Hotels Sales and Marketing International (HSMAI) organization, the Columbia River Gorge Visitors Association and Hood River Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau. Palen received a bachelor of science degree in recreation and park management from the University of Montana in Missoula, Mont. and an MBA in marketing management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif. Palen resides in Hood River, Ore. and enjoys alpine and Nordic skiing, horseback riding and swimming. EMMANUEL AFENTOULIS Executive Chef Emmanuel Afentoulis brings 28 years of culinary expertise and executive chef experience in restaurants, hotels and resorts throughout the United States and Canada to his position as executive chef of Skamania Lodge. Chef Afentoulis’ menu draws on the natural environment of the Columbia River Gorge and highlights the flavorful and seasonal ingredients of the region. Afentoulis uses the dining room’s massive wood-burning display oven to develop signature Pacific Northwest items. Prior to Skamania Lodge, Afentoulis was owner and executive chef at Marlowe’s Restaurant & Club, as well as executive chef at Silverado Country Club, both located in Napa, Calif. In addition, Afentoulis held positions with Hilton Hotels in Myrtle Beach, Atlanta and St. Louis. Afentoulis began his career as executive sous chef at Sheraton Hotels and Resorts and Queen Elizabeth Hotels in Montreal, Canada. JENNY DUCE Golf Professional Jenny Duce has been the golf professional at the Golf Center at Skamania Lodge since May 2005. Duce brings over five years of active professional experience in the golf industry including positions with Camas Meadows Golf Club and Persimmon Country Club. Prior to her current role as golf professional at Skamania, Duce was the director of sales at Camas Meadows Golf Club, and her responsibilities included all sales and special events coordination at the golf course. In 2002, she was the territory sales representative for Oregon, Washington state, Idaho, and Montana where she sold golf apparel and equipment. Duce began her career as a golf professional in 2000 at Camas Meadows Golf Club and Persimmon Country Club. Duce is active within the Camas, Wash. community and is currently head coach of the Camas High School Girls Golf Program, which she led to a league championship in the spring of 2005. This past year she was awarded Coach of the Year for the League. Originally from Portland, Ore., Duce attended Washington State University where she received both her undergraduate degree in business administration, with an emphasis in marketing, and her MBA with an emphasis in finance. She currently resides in Camas, Wash. with her husband, Gerald, and their daughter, Jade.
