It will also serve as a helpful reference tool, once the training has been completed. During the training session, you will learn how to conduct research and find on-point information using CCH online materials, and will be introduced to the specific content of your subscription. The techniques and methods illustrated in this guide are applicable to all resources accessible via the CCH® Research NetWork. To log in: 1. Type the following URL into your browser window: http://business.cch.com/network 2. Enter your User ID and Password* 3. Click Enter CCH Business & Finance – http://business.cch.com/network *NOTE: IP Access subscribers can log in without an ID and Password. IP Access users must log in to http://business.cch.com/ipnetwork from within their firm’s Intranet website. . Move through menu screens to view sub-menus and ultimately retrieve documents. Click on a menu topic to view underlying contents. Numbers in brackets represent underlying documents. Links to prior menu topics indicate your location within contents. Type your search expression 3. Click Search Note: You can target multiple publications within or across sections and/or target entire sections to search at once. Any publication with a checkbox to the left of its title is searchable. CCH Search Engine Functions: 􀂃 Not case sensitive 􀂃 Finds singular, plural and all tenses of your search terms 􀂃 Force a phrase by using quotation marks 􀂃 Use the exclamation point (!) to truncate a word 􀂃 Use the asterisk (*) to substitute for a character in a word 1. Target desired database(s). 2. Type your search expression. 3. Click Search. You can customize various search options, such as: the search method (e.g. Boolean), the maximum number of documents to be retrieved, how your results are displayed, and the application of CCH’s legal thesaurus. Search Methods All Terms – All the terms you enter will appear in documents that are retrieved, as if you used the word “and” between every word. This is the default setting. Any Term – At least one of the terms you enter will appear in retrieved documents, as if you put the word “or” between every word. Near – Resulting documents will contain search terms within 20 words of each other. Exact Phrase – When you enter a series of words that make a phrase and you want to find documents with just that phrase, select Exact Phrase. E.g., business judgment rule. Boolean –Use logical and proximity connectors between terms to impose rules of search. If no connectors are used, Exact Phrase will be implied. Logical Connectors Examples AND OR NOT Trust and disclosure Trust or disclosure Trust not disclosure Proximity Connectors Examples W/SEN – within 20 words W/PAR – within 80 words W/# -within a specific number of words Trust w/sen disclosure Trust w/par disclosure Trust w/5 disclosure CCH IRN Participant Guide CCH INCORPORATED January 2005 8 A WoltersKluwer Company Search Tip: To make Boolean your default search method, click on ‘Preferences’ (above the Search Expression box), click on the ‘Set Search Options’ tab, select Boolean from the dropdoow menu under Search Method, and click on ‘Apply Changes.’ You may still select other search methods on a search-by-search basis by returning to Search Tools. Narrow Search Results: You can further restrict your search by: • Limiting by date, e.g., “After 2000.” • Selecting particular document type(s) • Focusing your search within a specific part of a document, e.g., case-name. You Are Searching: Displays the publication(s) which you targeted for the current search. Search Now vs. Apply Changes • Search Now -searches within the current Search Results list. Note: this will only search within the first 200 documents on the Search Results list if you have not expanded the maximum number of documents to be retrieved in Search Tools. • Apply Changes -returns you to the Main Menu screen, allowing you to add or delete targeted databases, then click Search to run the search using the parameters you just selected against all targeted databases. Search Tip: Click ‘Clear Selections’ to reset your Search Tools to the default settings, return to Main Menu, and begin a new search. Menu Topics Indicate where the document can be found within a particular publication. You can link back to any menu topic level. Search Results Move between documents on your Search Results list. List Return to your initial document list. 1st Term Locate the initial search term within a document. Nearby Documents Move between documents in publication order (as laid out on menu screen).CCH IRN Participant Guide CCH INCORPORATED January 2005 10 A WoltersKluwer Company Saving your Research Save Link Create links to CCH menus & documents • Link Express – Choose to copy a link or add to your Browser Favorites • Favorite -Add a link to this document to your Browser Favorites. Keep List Create your own personalized list of document links. Store Document • Export -Open/save document(s) as RTF files. • Print – Open separate web frame with text-only view of your document(s) which you can then send to a printer or leave open for reference. Target the desired database 2. Click Find by Citation 3. Enter a citation into the appropriate template 4. Click the Search button to its left. 2. Click on “Find by Citation”. 4. Click ‘Search’ button on left. 1. Check a box next to a publication. 3. Enter the citation into the appropriate template. Click on the Publication/Database title. 2. Keep clicking on subsequent titles until you get to your document. SEARCHING FOR WORD(S) or PHRASE(S) 1. On a library tab, click the checkbox next to the item(s) you want to search. 2. Type your search terms in the box on the navigation bar. 3. Click the Search Tools button (to view or change the defaults). 4. Click the Search button. RETRIEVE A DOCUMENT USING A CITATION 1. On a library tab, click the checkbox next to a publication title. 2. Click the Find by Citation button. 3. Type the reference number(s) into the appropriate citation format. 4. Click the Search button on the left. STARTING A NEW SEARCH • Click Clear Selections. PRINTING – FROM A DOCUMENT OR A LIST 1. Click on Print Text Only. From within a List: a. Choose Entire Documents, Titles Only, or Titles & URLs b. Check the box for ‘Yes, convert the first # documents’. 2. Information appears in a separate web frame. Click Yes to Print or Cancel.
