Willis “Paid for and authorized by the Democratic Party of Georgia: 1100 Spring St. NW, Suite 408, Atlanta, GA 30309. Jane V. Kidd, Chair; Michael Thurmond, Vice-Chair; Rex Templeton, Jr., Treasurer. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.” National Overview Narrowing the Field of Presidential Candidates Presidential candidates from most parties are voted on in direct primary elections. Georgia, along with nineteen other States, will hold its primary on February 5, 2008 on Super Duper or Tsunami Tuesday. * Presidential candidates receive delegates to their parties convention based on primary election results. 2008 Party Conventions: April, 2008 Constitution Party National Convention May 23–26 Libertarian National Convention July 10-13 Green Party National Convention August 25–28 Democratic National Convention September 1–4 Republican National Convention Kansas City, Missouri Denver, Colorado Chicago, Illinois Denver, Colorado Saint Paul, Minnesota The Democratic National Convention The United States Presidential Nominating Convention of the Democratic Party, also known as the Democratic National Convention will be held from Monday, August 25, 2008 through Thursday, August 28, 2008, in Denver Colorado. Denver's Pepsi Center will play host to the event, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of Denver's only other Democratic National Convention. The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi will be nominated to serve as Permanent Chair of the convention while Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius; Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte; and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin will be nominated as Permanent Convention Co-Chairs. The convention itself will host 3,515 pledged delegates and 852 un-pledged delegates. The majority of pledged delegates are selected by primary voters and caucus participants in every state. * Pledged delegates are delegates who pledge their support or vote to a specific presidential candidate. * Un-Pledged delegates or Super delegates are DNC members, Democratic members of Congress, Governors, and other important figures in the party who do not have to pledge their support to or vote for a specific Presidential Candidate. 5 “Paid for and authorized by the Democratic Party of Georgia: 1100 Spring St. NW, Suite 408, Atlanta, GA 30309. Jane V. Kidd, Chair; Michael Thurmond, Vice-Chair; Rex Templeton, Jr., Treasurer. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.” National Overview Democratic National Convention Continued The number of pledged delegates are determined by the number of votes each state gave to Democratic candidate in the last three Presidential elections and the percentage of electors each state contributes to the Electoral College. Washington DC, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Democrats Abroad are the exception to the rule. They all receive a fixed number of delegates. * States and the exceptions are awarded delegates based on the primary elections. * Each Presidential candidate receives delegates to vote on their behalf if they receive 15% or more of the votes cast in a state primary. The delegate population is also based on the state’s ethnic make-up and a 50% gender split. * The Delegates Convention Guide, which covers hotel, travel, things-to-do, convention schedules, Delegate Roles and Responsibilities, etc., provided to Congressional District Chairs on July 1, 2008. The Electoral College After the conventions nominate their presidential candidates of choice, all 50 States and the District of Columbia host Presidential Elections (November 4, 2008) to select members of the Electoral College. * A State’s Electoral College equals the number of US Senators and US Representatives in each State. Once the members of the Electoral College are selected, they meet in their respective states (December 15, 2008) to cast their votes for the President and Vice-President. The 44th President and 47th Vice–President must receive at least 270 Electoral College votes in order to win the presidency. The Electoral College winner or President will be inaugurated on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. * If no presidential candidate receives a majority vote in the Electoral College, then a President Elect is selected by the US House of Representatives with each state receiving one vote. Last occurred in 1825. * If no vice presidential candidate receives a majority vote, then the Vice-President is selected by the US Senate. Last occurred in 1837. 6 “Paid for and authorized by the Democratic Party of Georgia: 1100 Spring St. NW, Suite 408, Atlanta, GA 30309. Jane V.
