Science Careers: What’s in Your Future?
Deciding on a career can be a daunting task for young people. Learning as
much as possible about various careers can help you make more informed
decisions about careers you might like to pursue and about how to best
prepare for those careers. Job related sites offer information and statistics
about various careers and tools for choosing a career. Use the resources
below to complete an Inspiration concept map about a science-related
career and then to write your research essay.
Occupational Outlook Handbook gives detailed information about careers. Search for your career title
and then check out the training and education needed, the earnings, the expected job prospects, what
workers do on the job, and working conditions. www.bls.gov/oco
America's Job Bank guides young people to make informed career choices. The site has several
sections including Career InfoNet -- statistics about various careers; The Learning Exchange - information
about learning opportunities; Employers - a resume service; and Job Seekers - information about job

AstroVenture and NASA Careers provides insight into career related to space travel.
Science Careers at the Bureau of Labor Statistics gives statistical information on science careers.
Mapping Your Future reviews various careers. The site allows for searching for science careers.
US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives detailed information about careers, including wages, outlook,
school/training expectations, etc. Use the “A-Z Index” in the upper right hand corner of the page to

Inspiration Concept Map:
Open Internet Explorer
Go to the Hedrick MS web site.
Click on Tech Lessons/6 Grade Technology Lessons
Click on the link to the Inspiration concept map named “Science
Careers” and save the file to your network folder.
Click Open from the next dialog box.
Click View/Header and Footer. Add your full name, your teacher’s name and period number, and
Change the main idea to the name of your science career.
Click File/Page Setup/Landscape
Use the concept map to add your notes from your research. Avoid plagiarism and do not copy/paste your
information. Be sure to include the resources you used to gather your information in the resources box.
When complete, click File/Print Preview. DO NOT PRINT UNTIL YOUR TEACER GIVES YOU
