                                          Port Statistics Information

The Table1 below is a listing of Caribbean Ports with the TEUs 2 for the years 1999-2001,
as provided by the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA). The list is in order of most
TEUs in 2001. The Ports of interest to the Gulf of Honduras Project are highlighted.

TEU = “Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit,” a standard linear measurement used in quantifying container
traffic flows. As examples, one twenty-foot long container equals one TEU while one forty-foot container
equals two TEUs (i.e., 40'÷ 20' = 2).

The table clearly shows that of the 70 ports for which data is available, 3 Gulf of
Honduras ports are in the top 18, while the Port of Belize City ranks in about the middle
at number 36. Regretfully the CSA does not have data for the Port of Big Creek, in
Belize.

However, given that ships visiting the ports must pass through the Gulf of Honduras,
collectively these ports (Puerto Cortés, Honduras, Puerto Barrios and Puerto Santo Tomás
de Castilla in Bahía de Amatique, Guatemala, and Big Creek and Belize City Port,Belize)
have a total TEU value of 755,140, which ranks the Gulf of Honduras Ports 3 rd right behind
Colón and Kingston. An analogy is the Port of New Orleans on the Mississippi River, which
actually consists of a number of ports and collectively is one of the biggest in the United
States, where all ships must use the Mississippi River to call on any of the ports.

For another source of Port Statistics and some verification, additional information
provided by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) was used. AAPA
lists their Ports by land region, i.e., Central and South America, rather than by Caribbean
Sea area as used by CSA. As a result this list includes many South American countries,
which fall considerably outside the target area. Thus for comparison purposes the AAPA
list was reduced to include only Ports which were common to the CSA list. As a result,
of the 26 ports listed, the four ports within the Gulf of Honduras project area fall well in
the upper half as shown in the table 3 below.
