Scenario:
CHAIRS UNlimited are celebrating 100 years of chair design. You have been asked
to develop a seating design that evokes the work of a given designer. They have
provided you with a list of designers from which to choose. You will need to
conduct a preliminary investigation into all the designers prior to selecting a single
designer.

CHAIRS UNlimited have adopted a minimum environment impact policy; they want
all future designs to be manufactured from recycled, reused or found materials.

brief:
You will be producing a design portfolio to show the CHAIRS Unlimited team your
proposals for a seating design that evokes the work of a designer chosen from the
list they have provided.

They are expecting to see a scale model of your proposal plus a presentation that
gives them your vision of how this design has evolved and may be taken into
production.

They will require a final summary report.

This assignment will provide evidence towards Unit 9 but you will need to
complete at least one more assignment to fulfil all the unit criteria in full

activity 1:

You need to use a variety of different sources in your investigations. Do not rely on
using the internet. You should visit museums and art galleries as well as collecting
material from books and magazines. You may need to research 2 or 3 of the given
designers before deciding which one you are going to focus your further research
and focus your design ideas on.

Make a preliminary investigation of chair design. You will need to collect pictures
of a wide range of different chairs.
Consider and record:
 Identity of the designer, country of origin and date of design.
 Identify the influences from different periods and from different cultures.
 Identify the similarities and differences from different periods and from
       different cultures.
 Mass produced chairs or one offs?

                                                                    Unit 2: P1, M1,D1

activity 2

Make an investigation into the use of recycled, reused and found materials in chair
design.

Comment on:
 how materials, techniques, processes and formal elements have been
             used in the design.
        Date of designs
        Other influences or details
 the similarities and differences between reused materials and Dadaist
             ‘Ready Mades’.

Use this investigation to develop you own ‘Ready Made’ response.

                                                                   Unit 2: P1, M1, P2
Activity 3

Using your investigations of the designers from the given list and illustrate your
results with examples of their work to identify the influences of historical and
contemporary design developments.
                                                                  Unit 2: P1, M1, D1
Activity 4
Select one designer from the list to imaginatively and independently identify the
influences of historical and contemporary design developments. You may need to
continue your research and make further visits to art galleries and museums.
You need to collect and collate a collection of their work.
You will need to make comments on:
 what they made or continue to make
 what materials the work is made from
 how the work is made – handmade as one-off pieces or mass produced
 why you have chosen this designer and the pieces you have selected to
present or to influence your own design ideas
 what formal elements are used
 how 2D and 3D visual language has been used
 why the work was made

You will need to imaginatively and independently present complex information
about the work studied.

Don’t waste time providing biographical details as these can be presented in your
research file.
                                                      Unit 2: P1,P2, M1,M2,D1,D2
Activity 5

Design a chair to evoke the style of the designer you have studied.

You will need to show a range of different ideas and demonstrate how you have
imaginatively and independently explored a wide range of historical and
contemporary references in researching and developing own response. You should
make maquettes/models as well as draw your ideas. You can also use a CAD CAM
programme to explore your ideas.
                                                                 Unit 2 :P2,M2,D2
                                                                  Unit 9:P1,M1,D1
   1. You will need to choose one design to develop through to a fully detailed
       design proposal.
   2. You will make a scale (1:10) model of the chair.
                                                         Unit 9:P2,M2,D2; P3,M3,D3

What you should hand in:

   1. preliminary chair design investigation (minimum 2 sheets)
   2. investigation into recycled, reused and found materials in chair design
   3. investigation into 'ready mades'
   4. own 'ready made' chair design and development
   5. investigation into designers from given list (minimum 2 sheets)
   6. detailed designer investigation (minimum 3 sheets)
   7. development of chair design (minimum 3 sheets)
   8. scale model chair (scale 1:10)
