ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY
POSITION: Department Head, Professor, Department of RTH
The Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality Management
invites nominations and applications from talented and dynamic
national leaders for the position of Department Head. The
Department Head is responsible for providing academic,
administrative, and professional leadership, including building on the
department’s reputation for teaching and service excellence, fostering
a culture that values scholarship and research, developing external
relations, and fund raising. Position begins August 1, 2009.
QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate should have an earned doctorate in a field relevant to
recreation and parks or hospitality and tourism management, and a
distinguished record of research, scholarly accomplishments, teaching,
and professional service. The candidate should show a demonstrated
record of effective leadership and managerial communication. The
candidate must currently hold the rank of Professor or be qualified to
enter at the rank of Professor at The University of North Carolina at
Greensboro. Candidates who have demonstrated success working with
diverse groups of students and faculty are preferred.
We seek a Department Head who will help us continue to increase the
Department’s national prominence. In keeping with the strategic goals
of the university, the school, and the department, the candidate must
show willingness to support the increasing need for effective long
term planning for both curriculum and research, as well as corporate
and alumni development. Experience facilitating or leading
interdisciplinary collaboration is desirable. Candidates should have
strong democratic leadership qualities and appreciation for the
diversity of sub-disciplines across commercial recreation and special
event management, therapeutic recreation, leisure services
management, hotel and restaurant management, and travel and
tourism management.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include administration and oversight of the general operations
of the Department, including: curricular and budgetary management;
ongoing program development, evaluation, and accreditation; faculty
recruitment, development, and evaluation; student recruitment and
retention; development and outreach activities. Department Heads
also serve as members of the School of HHP administrative team.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience.

THE DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION, TOURISM, AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT
The Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality Management takes pride in being a collegial work
environment and is one of five departments within the School of Health and Human Performance. The
Department’s diverse faculty of eleven supports two undergraduate degree programs: Recreation and Parks
Management (RPM) and Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), as well as a Master of Science
degree in Parks and Recreation Management. Areas of concentration include: commercial recreation and
events management, leisure services management, therapeutic recreation, hotel and restaurant management,
and travel and tourism management. The Department currently enrolls 340 undergraduate majors and 30
graduate students. The RPM program has been accredited by the NRPA/AALR Council on Accreditation
since 1981.
THE SCHOOL
The School of Health and Human Performance is one of six professional schools, in addition to the College
of Arts and Sciences that comprise the University. The School’s mission, through excellence in teaching,
research, and service, is to enhance the health and well-being of the people of the state, region, and nation.
The School values diversity, creativity and balance in the life-long development of the total person. The
diversity of the faculty and students of HHP is 20% and 30% respectively, from non-white ethnic groups,
well above the national average in both categories. The School currently enrolls over 1,400 undergraduate
and graduate majors in its five academic departments: Communication Sciences and Disorders; Dance;
Exercise and Sport Science; Public Health Education; and Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality
Management. The faculty numbers 73 with 58 additional teaching and research assistants. The Dean’s Office
includes the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, an Instructional
Technology Consultant, and four support staff.
THE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a research university with high research
activity (Carnegie classification) and one of the three original campuses comprising The University of North
Carolina. The University has a long-standing commitment to academic excellence. Among its 838 faculty
members are nationally known scholars who regularly contribute to new knowledge in their fields through
research and other creative work. Current enrollment totals approximately 17,000 students, including 3,000
graduate students. There are currently 22 doctoral programs, four Master of Fine Arts Degrees, and 59
master’s degrees in a wide variety of majors and concentrations. The University generates approximately $33
million in external funding annually and houses a Gerontology Program, an Institute for Health, Science and
Society, Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships, and a Center for Healthy Aging and Living
at the Greensboro Center for Innovative Development, all supporting interdisciplinary collaborative research.
THE COMMUNITY
Greensboro is a beautiful and thriving city with a population of 223,000 and many outstanding public and
private recreation areas and facilities. The city has its own Symphony Orchestra, Community Theater, Arts
Council, Civic Ballet, major sports coliseum, baseball stadium, and an exciting revitalized downtown district
near UNCG. Greensboro is located in the Piedmont Triad (population 1.2 million), an area of great natural
beauty, diverse industry, cultural arts, historic sites, and mild temperatures. North Carolina’s mountain
resorts are an easy two-hour drive from Greensboro and the Atlantic coast beaches of North and South
Carolina are three to four hours away.
