```									     WELCOME
YOU ALL TO THE
INTERACTIVE SESSION
ON THE TOPIC
THE MOTIONS OF EARTH
We Know That:
o Earth is Continuously spinning on its
imaginary axis
o The axis of earth is not
perpendicular but tilted to
one side making angle of
o
231/2
o It is spinning from west to east
o It completes one round in about 24 hours
This motion of earth is called
ROTATION
Further, we know that:
Earth also revolves round the
sun
It revolves in its fixed path called ORBIT
It takes 365 days and 6 hours, which
makes one year
6 hours each year are added over a period
of 4 years, which is called LEAP YEAR.
This is called the earth’s
REVOLUTION                ORBIT
SUN
During Rotation, each part of the earth
faces the sun
The part which faces the sun has DAY and
the other part has NIGHT
In this example:
Treat Lamp as Sun
So Front part of the earth is
lighted and has DAY
and
Back side of the earth is not
lighted and has NIGHT
The revolution of earth also causes
different seasons
June 21: Rays of the sun are vertical at Tropic of Cancer.
Called SUMMER SOLSTICE
Sept 23: Rays of the sun are vertical at the Equator.
Called AUTUMN EQUINOX
Dec. 22: Rays of the sun are vertical at the Tropic of
Capricorn. Called WINTER SOLSTICE
March 21: Rays of the sun are vertical at the Equator.
Called VERNAL EQUINOX
WINTER
SOLSTICE
SUMMER
SOLSTICE
Axis of the Earth
Rotation of the Earth
Revolution of the Earth
How the Day and Night are made   AND
And Now time to Check,
what you have learnt today?
o
At what degree the axis of earth are tilted    231/2
In which direction earth is spinning           West to East
In how many time, it completes one round       24 hours
The path on which earth revolves is called..   ORBIT
On September 23, Rays of sun are vertical at   Equator
which part of the earth
Name the season when Rays of the sun are       Winter Solstice
vertical at Tropic of Capricorn.
HAVE A NICE DAY!
