You’ve got your license… Now what? Now you are a valuable cadet staff member! With your license, you will be welcomed to the Familiarization Site located nearest to you. Gliding will begin there in late August or early September, and you have a major part to play! As a cadet staff member, you will be among those who are responsible for the safety and the education of the visiting cadets. You will be expected to supervise them and spend time explaining to them how a glider flies. In exchange for your hard work, you will be allowed to build your experience as a pilot through both solo and dual trips. You will be able to fly with many new instructors, and at new airports. Once you reach 10 hours PIC or if you are power qualified, you will be eligible to apply for a Qualification Upgrade to Front Seat Familiarization Pilot. It is an amazing experience to take a young cadet up on their first flight ever! It doesn’t end there, and this pamphlet outlines some of the possibilities that may be available to you over the next few years. Career Path – As a Cadet Summer 2008 – Graduate with your glider pilot wings Fall 2008 – Participate in familiarization flying as often as possible, work towards 10 hours PIC and your familiarization rating Winter 2008/2009 – Apply for the Power Pilot Scholarship, with Staff Cadet at Debert as your backup plan Spring 2009 – Participate in familiarization flying as often as possible. You should continue towards earning your familiarization rating this spring Summer 2009 – Power Pilot Scholarship or Staff Cadet Fall 2009 – Participate in familiarization flying as often as possible. You should earn your familiarization rating this fall and possibly your Rear Seat Rating (15 hours PIC required) If you age out before Summer 2010, enrol as a CIC officer and apply for the Glider Instructor Course. Talk to Capt Cooper In September for more information. Winter 2009/2010 – Apply to be a Staff Cadet in Debert Spring 2010 – Participate in familiarization flying as often as possible Summer 2010 – Work as a Staff Cadet in Debert, flying often Career Path – As an Officer Fall 2010 – Enrol as a CIC Officer, entitling you to pay when you participate in weekend famil flying. Work hard to improve your skills in preparation to be an instructor. Winter 2010/2011 – Apply for the Glider Instructor Course and for summer employment. Also apply for CIC Officer courses -BOQ and MOC. (You are paid for your time) Spring 2011 – After university finishes for the year, take BOQ and MOC. Summer 2011 – Complete the instructor course and be employed to teach your first students. CIC officers can continue to take courses, usually about once a year. The Basic Officer Qualification is the first such course and will prepare you for your role as an officer. Each course usually lasts around 10 days, and you are paid for attending. The courses are based around leadership and other skills that look great on a resume. The nice thing about being a glider instructor is job security! Once you are qualified, you are in high demand, and you won’t need to worry about finding a job every spring as university finishes. You will be well compensated for your time. The best part? IT’S FUN! Being an instructor is an extremely rewarding experience!!!!! Your Private Pilots License and Summer Employment Contact Information and Reference Material Regional Gliding School (Atlantic) We hope that you will be applying for the Power Pilot Scholarship course next summer. You will find that an engine adds a whole new dimension to your aviation experience! There are limited spots however, and you might not get selected on your first try. We suggest that you apply to be a Staff Cadet here in Debert as your backup plan. Applying to be a Staff cadet does not effect your Power Pilot Scholarship application, but it’s good insurance in case things don’t go as planned. If you have a summer left as a cadet after taking your Power Pilot Scholarship, we would be very pleased to have you join our staff in Debert as a Staff Cadet. Staff Cadets are rewarded for their hard work with flying throughout the summer. It’s not unusual for a Staff Cadet to fly each and every day. This is a great way for you to earn your Familiarization Rating or your Rear Seat Rating. Staff Cadets are paid, and the money you will make could be a significant contribution to your university fund. The summer employment opportunities continueonce you have 20 hours as pilot in command (PIC) you can enrol into the Cadet Instructor Cadre (become an officer) and apply to take the Glider Instructor Course. You will be paid for your time, and make more in a few months than you would working at most student jobs. Plus it’s fun!
