Schulich School of Business Wins National Award
For Outstanding Leadership in Teaching
Corporate Social Responsibility
TORONTO, ON – Monday, November 3, 2003 – The Schulich School of Business at
York University was today presented with a national award for outstanding leadership in
the field of corporate social responsibility
The award was given in “recognition of the outstanding contribution and leadership of
the Schulich School of Business at York University in preparing tomorrow's business
leaders to be responsible corporate citizens” and was based on the findings of a national
survey of MBA programs titled “Engaging Tomorrow’s Business Leaders.”
The survey was conducted by the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. Chris Pinney,
director of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy, presented the award to Schulich at a
conference hosted by the School titled “Teaching Strategy in the Age of the Triple
Bottom Line.”
“We’re very pleased to have received this recognition today from the Canadian Centre
for Philanthropy,” said Schulich Dean Dezsö J. Horváth. “The national survey
conducted by the Centre reinforces the findings of two other major surveys this year that
ranked Schulich number one in Canada and among the top six in the world when it comes
to teaching corporate social responsibility, and it follows the announcement of a $2-
million endowment from Hewlett-Packard to establish a Chair in Corporate Social
Responsibility.”
Added Dean Horváth: “Issues such as business ethics, corporate governance,
sustainability and social responsibility are increasingly vital to companies and
organizations. It is the responsibility of business schools – if they wish to remain relevant
– to teach these concepts to tomorrow’s business leaders.”
In June, Schulich was ranked the number one business school in Canada in a corporate
social responsibility survey jointly conducted by Canadian Business for Social
Responsibility and Corporate Knights magazine. In October, the School was ranked
among the top six schools in the world in a global survey conducted by the World
Resources Institute and the Aspen Institute. In addition, Hewlett-Packard Company
donated $2 million toward the endowment of a Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility
in recognition of Schulich’s global leadership in the field of corporate social
responsibility. The announcement was made by Hewlett-Packard Chairman and CEO
Carly Fiorina at Schulich’s annual James Gillies Alumni Lecture on October 28.
