the Warm Up and Work Out issue True North is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. a healthier model of healthcare maine’s center for functional medicine and the healing arts pat h f i n d e r NeWsletter | CaleNdar Of Classes | jaNUary–febrUary 2008 Make Massage work for you For many people, massage is a luxury. A once-a-year, “it’s my birthday” or special occasion event. It is a treat because you feel so wonderful afterward! But as more and more research is revealing, Melissa Williamson, LMT massage is not only a wonderful thing to do for yourself, but also a wise investment in your health. Anecdotal benefits of massage have been around for centuries. Researchers have been endeavoring to verify those benefits with some success. As with a number of CAM therapies, some of the challenges in research include measuring benefits that are often subjective (such as level of pain, anxiety, etc.) and finding a suitable control (e.g. some other kind of non-therapeutic touch modality) to sort out placebo effects. Increasingly, researchers are documenting benefits of massage therapy for people with conditions including insomnia, tendonitis, arthritis, chronic back pain and headaches. The Massage Therapy Research Foundation, a non-profit founded in 1990 by the American of Massage Therapy Association, is doing its part to fund and disseminate information about valid massage therapy research. Research projects funded include massage for migraine sufferers, impact in immune function in academically stressed individuals, and massage to help maintain elderly independence. Other massage research published in peer reviewed journals is also listed on the website. Interested? see MassaGe, page 2 True North patients speak “True North is so much more than a doctor’s office. One client in particular came to see me complaining of tendonitis of her elbow that was flaring up with her favorite activity, gardening. Through massage and awareness of movement, we addressed that issue so she could continue with her hobby without pain. She also found through our sessions that she held tension in other areas of her body and that receiving regular full-body massage helped to reduce tension in those areas and gave her an overall feeling of wellness and made her feel better able to deal with the physical and psychological stressors for work and personal life. Winter is a time when some of us tend to hunker down, reducing our activity level and developing issues such as low back pain. Massage can be helpful in loosening muscles that become chronically tight when they don’t get stretched out regularly. A massage therapist can be very helpful in reducing soreness after shoveling out your driveway and sidewalks – and teaching you how to do it right the next time. For individuals who get more active with skiing during this time of year, massage can help to keep you feeling limber and strong by facilitating recovery for tired, taxed muscles. The massage therapist can also teach stretches and self care you can do at home to help you feel better whether you are getting ready to ski or snuggle up with a book all winter. Massage is often about dealing with pain or discomfort. It can also be about creating awareness of areas in your body that are tight and likely to cause pain in the future – pain that can often be prevented with some simple steps! The reviewers warn against irradiating or cooking at high heat. The main source of polyphenol antioxidants is nutritional, since they are found in a wide array of phytonutrient-bearing foods. For example, most legumes; fruits such as apples, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, cranberries, grapes, pears, plums, raspberries, and strawberries; and vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, celery, onion and parsley are rich in polyphenol antioxidants. Red wine, chocolate, green tea, olive oil, bee pollen and many grains are alternative sources. The sounds of the vessels are quite unique. While individually shrill, when played together they produce comples harmonics and vibrations that seem to occur both within and outside the body. These extraordinary vibrations have psychoacoustic properties which induce an expanded state of consciousness which offers a slightly different access to the shamanic journey experience. While similar to a drum-supported shamanic journey state, the Peruvian vessels may produce different experiences.
