Thus a three year General Degree programme will consist of Six Semesters of study and
Four year Special Degree programme will consists of Eight Semesters of study.
The Calendar for an academic year is shown below

1.5 Credit Hours
The academic programme of the Faculty will operate on a credit valued semester based
course unit system. The unit of measure for academic credit purpose is the semester
hour. One Semester hour is normally equivalent to one hour of classroom work per week
per semester. Most courses meet for three lecture hours a week and have an academic
credit value of three semester hours. A course that meets for four hours a week is worth
four semester hours. On that basis the number of credit hours given for a particular
course is indicated in the following table.

Relations between class hours and credit hours
Number of Class Hours per Week Number of Credit Hours
       1 1
       2 2
       3 3
       4 4

A “Credit” is a time based quantitative measure assigned to course units on the basis of
number of student contact hours.
The norm at the Arts Faculty is fifteen hours of the lectures and tutorials is equivalent to
one credit. Thus most of the course units which have 45 hours lectures and incourse
assessments (including tutorials, presentations, project works etc) will earn 3 credits.
For Practical course units and field works 30/45/more than 45 hours work is equivalent
to one credit
For English/Basic French/Basic Sinhala Second Languages of first year course 45
student contact hours (Lectures, Discussions, Listening, Oral Communication etc.) is
equivalent to one credit. For English/Basic French/Basic Sinhala Second Languages of
second & third year course 45 student contact hours (Lectures, Discussions, Listening,
Oral Communication etc.) will be assigned
For Career Guidance 15 contact hours will be assigned
The credits allocated to the principal subjects except the Dissertation may vary from two
to four

1.6 Student Course load
The credit hours given for each course depends on the number of class hours as
indicated above. The typical course load for a semester is 14 - 16 credit hours. It means
that a student is given classroom instruction of 14 – 16 hours per week. First year
common programme is designed to carry 32 credit hours. During the Second, Third and
Fourth years the number of credit hours per semester may vary among programmes.
The total credit hours required to earn a General degree is 90 and Special degree 120.
The minimum aggregate of the credits of the course units followed in a General/ Special
(Arts)/ Special (Fine Arts) is indicated in the table below

Degree First year Second Third Fourth year Total
                                   year year

Special (Arts) 32 28 30 30 120
