					      Graduate Student Pre-Dissertation and Conference Participation Grants
                       for China, Japan, or Korea Studies

PRE-DISSERTATION GRANT:
This grant provides partial support for travel related to pre-dissertation research in and
about China, Japan, or Korea. Priority is given to first-time applicants who are in their
early stage of dissertation research.

For China and Korea Studies: The maximum amount is $600 for international travel
and $300 for domestic travel.
For Japan Studies: The maximum amount is $1000 for international travel and $300 for
domestic travel.

Application procedure:
Application materials should ALL be submitted online to Elizabeth Greene at
egreene@pitt.edu, and should include:

      * Identifying information: Student Name, PeopleSoft ID number, School and
Department, applicant’s Home and Campus addresses, name and e-mail of Advisor.

        *A proposal to the China, Japan, or Korea Council, addressing the topic of
research, specific goals of the trip, pre-trip preparation, and other evidence justifying the
trip. Please tell us if you have received this award before.

        * A brief letter of support from the applicant's main academic advisor. Please
remind your faculty advisor to submit the recommendation on-line
to: egreene@ucis.pitt.edu

       *A detailed budget listing costs of travel, lodging, meals, supplies, and incidentals
(such as museum fees if applicable, or the like).

Deadlines:
       For China: OCTOBER 30 and JANUARY 31
       For Japan Studies and Korea Studies: Rolling deadlines


GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION GRANT:
This grant provides partial support for graduate students to travel to a professional
conference and present a paper. Priority is given to first time applicants.

For China and Korea Studies: The maximum amount is $600 for international travel
and $300 for domestic travel.
For Japan Studies: The maximum amount is $1000 for international travel and $300 for
domestic travel.

Application should be submitted BEFORE the conference takes place.
Application procedure:
Application materials should ALL be submitted online to Elizabeth Greene at
egreene@pitt.edu and should include:

      * Identifying information: Student Name, PeopleSoft ID number, School and
Department, applicant’s Home and Campus addresses, name and e-mail of Advisor.

        * A cover letter that briefly explains (a) the name of the conference you will
attend, (b) paper title, panel title, and a brief abstract of the paper, (c ) evidence of
conference paper acceptance (if this is not available on-line, please give Elizabeth Greene
a photocopy) .

        * A brief letter of support from the applicant's main academic advisor. Please
remind your faculty advisor to submit the recommendation on-line
to: egreene@ucis.pitt.edu.

       *A detailed budget listing costs of travel, lodging, meals, conference registration,
and incidentals (photocopying your paper, postage, and the like).


Deadlines:
       For China Studies: OCTOBER 30, JANUARY 31, and APRIL 1
       For Japan and Korea Studies: Rolling deadline
