					                    BEACH SAFETY OFFICER
                                    PREAMBLE

This series includes positions that have responsibility for promoting and ensuring
safety at public beaches in provincial parks, in addition to performing lifeguard
duties when necessary. When attendance is low, employees are required to
assist with various park maintenance programs.

Exclusions

This series will not include those positions

              - responsible for promoting and ensuring compliance with rules and
              regulations in other areas of provincial parks

              - where the primary responsibilities are included in the definition of
              any other category.
                    BEACH SAFETY OFFICER 1
                                      GENERAL

This is the working level of the series. Under supervision of the Beach Safety
Captain or Park Ranger, employees perform Lifeguard duties and ensure public
safety at beaches in provincial parks. Employees may be required to function as
assistant captains, and during low attendance periods, employees are required to
assist with various parks maintenance programs.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Responsible for and promotes public safety in an assigned beach area.

Performs lifeguarding duties.

Patrols beach areas by land or water.

Maintains necessary safety equipment.

Prepares daily reports.

May be required to assist with the supervision of the unit.

Assists with maintenance of park facilities and equipment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

                                  QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques.

Knowledge of water safety procedures.

Ability to deal effectively with the public.

Demonstrated leadership skills.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Education, Training and Experience

Royal Life Saving Society Bronze Cross; valid first aid and cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation certificate.
                    BEACH SAFETY OFFICER 2
                                      GENERAL

This is the supervisory level of the series. Employees in this class report to a
Park Ranger and function as captains in charge of a beach safety unit
responsible for the safety/lifeguard program in an area or district. Staff
supervision, training and evaluation are responsibilities at this level and assisting
with various parks maintenance programs is required during low attendance
periods.

                                  TYPICAL DUTIES

Organizes and supervises the activities of the Beach Safety Unit.

Conducts in-service recurrent training.

Ensures equipment is properly maintained.

Handles complaints and concerns from the public and liaises with Park Rangers
on serious or major complaints.

Evaluates the beach safety program in the area and makes recommendations.

Prepares reports including the annual Beach Safety Report for the district.

Assists with the maintenance of parks facilities and equipment.

May be required to carry out the duties of a Beach Safety Officer 1.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

                                  QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience

Royal Life Saving Society Bronze Cross; valid first aid and cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation certificates. A minimum of one year's experience as a Beach Safety
Officer including experience as an assistant captain, or related work experience
acceptable to the employing authority.
