MEDIA RELEASE To: All Editors 30 July 2007 Active lifestyle encouraged The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in North West Province embarked on a campaign to get young and old people of the province participating in sport and recreation. The activities conducted under the Siyadlala Mass Participation Programme were aimed at creating awareness and to encourage an active lifestyle by engaging in various sporting codes. Three events were held in Mafikeng (Magogwe, ward 17), Khunwana and Letlhabile in Bojanala District. Over 1200 young people from the age of seven to grown ups attended the three events, that covered codes such as Indigenous games (kgati, khokho, morabaraba), street soccer, basket ball, hand ball, aerobics and fun athletics. Siyadlala Mass Participation Programme (MPP) is an initiative of Sport and Recreation South Africa launched by Minister Rev Makhenkesi Stofile in 2004. The programme is intended among others, to address social ills like crime, unemployment and poverty. To impact on individuals self esteem, physical health and well being, life skills as well as to address idleness that in most cases leads to social illness like obesity. The programme has been implemented in all four districts of the province as well as 22 hubs (i.e. all local municipalities within the province).
