THE RATNAPURA TOWN

      TO IDENTIFY THE FLOOD PRONE AREAS
      TO ANALYSE THE FLOOD FREQUENCY
      TO ASSESS FLOOD RISK AND VULNERABILITY
      TO ESTIMATE FLOOD LOSS

3.0 STUDY AREA

        RATNAPURA TOWN IN THE SOUTH CENTRAL SRI
LANKA IS SELECTED AS THE STUDY       AREA. IT CONSISTS
OF 15 GN DIVISIONS (WARDS), WITH A POPULATION OF
45,822 IN 2002 AND AN AREA OF 2218.4 Ha. ANNUAL
INUNDATION FROM THE FLOOD WATERS OF KALU GANGA
DUE TO THE SOUTH WEST MONSOONS IS PART AND
PARCEL OF THE POPULATION OF THE RATNAPURA TOWN.
BEING SITUATED IN THE MID FLOOD PLAIN AREA ITS
VULNERABILITY TO DISASTERS IS VERY HIGH. THE
CATASTROPHIC FLOODS THAT
OCCURRED IN MAY 2003 RESULTED IN MANY DEATHS AND
LOSS OF PROPERTY.
