2/5/09                              Outreach Programs                                        2/5/09: Parks & Recreation continues its quest to combat youth violence               O
                                                                                             with positive outreach programs. “Fun 2 Be Fit” is a youth obesity program
                                                                                             designed to promote physical activity and healthy eating habits. This
                                                                                             program exposes children to various forms of group exercise regimens and
                                                                                             nutritional instruction. “Fun 2 Be Fit” is offered at five locations throughout
                                                                                             the city; these locations include: Greenview Park, Katherine M. Bellfield
                                                                                             Booker Washington Heights Cultural Arts Center, Carver Lyon Elementary
                                                                                             School, Logan Elementary School and EdVenture Children’s Museum.
                                                                                             2/12/09: This week’s focus has been on collaborations that will expand                O
                                                                                             the department’s ability to reach and impact the lives of our youth. We
                                                                                             have met with the owner of Riverside Golf Center to discuss the possibility
                                                                                             of providing golf instruction for youth that will complement and expand the
                                                                                             Department’s successful First Tee program. We have also met with
                                                                                             representatives of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to establish
                                                                                             collaboration on the Midnight Hoops and Crossroads programs.
1/29/09                             Community Outreach                                       Staff members, including the Parks Planner, Youth Commissioner Special                O
                                                                                             Programs Supervisor, Athletics Supervisor, Events Coordinator, and the
                                                                                             Executive Director of the Police Activity League met on Monday 1/26/09
                                                                                             with the Richland One Community Coalition organization (ROCC) to share
                                                                                             information about parks facilities and activities. This meeting and
                                                                                             the ROCC forum is intended to share information on programming and

                                                                         positive youth initiatives. By collaborating with other agencies, the
                                                                         Department of Parks and Recreation hopes to reach a broader
                                                                         demographic and work to share in services as opposed to duplicating
                                                                         2/19/09: It is our goal to continually increase the number of young people
                                                                         reached and positively influenced by this department. To that end on
                                                                         February 20, 2009 we will take approximately 100 young people to a
                                                                         Charlotte Bobcats basketball game as part of the Charlotte Bobcats
                                                                         Organization’s outreach initiative. We are also proud to have Benedict
                                                                         College as a partner in this endeavor. This field trip will give our young
                                                                         people exposure to positive activities, provide them with yet
                                                                         another opportunity to broaden their horizons, engage in healthy behavior
                                                                         and promote positive relationships with peers.
                                                                         2/26/09: The February 20 collaboration between the Department of Parks
                                                                         and Recreation, the Charlotte Bobcats Basketball Organization and
                                                                         Benedict College was, by all accounts, an unqualified success. Seventy-
                                                                         seven young people (18 girls and 59 boys), 12 chaperones (nine of them
                                                                         Parks & Recreation staff) utilized complimentary tickets provided by the
                                                                         Bobcats and traveled on buses provided by Benedict College to watch the
                                                                         Charlotte Bobcats play the Orlando Magic at Time Warner Cable Arena.
                                                                         The young people ages 8-17 came from 7 participating City of Columbia
                                                                         Parks (Woodland, King, St. Anna’s, Lorick, Katherine M. Bellfield Booker
                                                                         Washington Heights Cultural Arts Center, Heathwood & Hyatt). It is this
                                                                         kind of outreach and collaboration that the Department of Parks and
                                                                         Recreation will continue to pursue in its effort to be the safe haven that
                                                                         young people will turn to for recreation, education and motivation

1/15/09                             South Edisto Rosewood Park project   Construction has begun on the South Edisto Rosewood Park Community              O
                                                                         Center. The 2,500 sq. ft. center nestled on 1.75 acres in the heart of the
                                                                         South Edisto Rosewood Court community will provide yet another safe
                                                                         haven for our young people. The project that will take approximately six
                                                                         months to complete will be home to community based projects, programs
                                                                         and initiatives. The programs that will include after school and summer
                                                                         activities will be developed in partnership with community leaders,
                                                                         business neighbors, park patrons and Housing Authority officials who will

                                                                       1/22/09: Construction of the South Edisto Rosewood Park Community
                                                                       Center is now 10% complete. Meetings with City of Columbia Housing
                                                                       Authority and other community leaders have been scheduled to discuss the
                                                                       programs to be implemented at South Edisto.
1/15/09                              Charles R. Drew Wellness Center   We have begun construction on an exciting water feature at Charles R.             O
                                                                       Drew Wellness Center that promises upon completion to attract greater
                                                                       numbers of community youth to the facility.
11/19/08                             PAL In The Parks Program          12/04/08: The Parks & Recreation and Police Departments recently                  O
                                                                       received positive media attention for their efforts to encourage youth
                                                                       participation in Police Athletic/Activities League in the Parks (PAL in the
                                                                       Parks). This program now has the participation of 60 neighborhood
                                                                       youth. This activity and many others in our parks will emphasize the
                                                                       importance of mentoring and building one-on-one relationships with the
                                                                       young people in our communities.
                                                                       2/12/09: Met with Richland County Sheriff Department to discuss how               O
                                                                       Richland County can become a part of the PAL in the Parks.

                                                                       neighborhoods and focus city programs in those areas. A summary of
                                                                       findings will be completed soon. This information includes all Council Dist.
