Essay Writing: Compare and Contrast
State a conclusion about something you have learned and use information to explain

2. Main Idea: Decide why the similarities and differences are important. State
a belief that you think the comparison and contrast suggest.
3. Supporting Details: Select the information that supports your conclusion
4. Write your essay as clearly and as briefly as possible. Include only
sentences that are necessary to explain your conclusion.
A. An opening sentence which introduces your conclusion (main idea)
B. Statements that express how the two ideas, things, or people are alike. Use
signal words like both, alike, similar, same, and resemble.
C. Statements that express how the two ideas, things, or people are different.
Use signal words like but, although, in contrast to, unlike, and while.
D. A conclusion sentence stating what you have learned.
