On Apr 21, 2008, the 2.5 millionth candidate since 2002 took his City & Guilds high stakes exam online in Cumbria with the GOLA (global online assessment) capability -- and passed. The journey to 2.5m started with a strong strategic vision to transform and enrich the learning experience in a global context. This was implemented in small but significant steps as the charity moved into the new and uncharted territory of skills and e-business. There are many benefits in motivating more and more people to welcome e-pathways. On-demand high-stakes testing eliminated the need for fixed exam dates, which means candidates can be tested when they are ready. Candidates also perceive online marking to be fairer and less subjective than human markers. City & Guilds launched the GOLA capability in September 2002. By September 2003, the Awarding Body was delighted and amazed to see more than 65,000 candidates take online high stakes exams.
