Over my many years as a breastfeeding educator, I have gradually shifted the words I use to explain how to position a baby when breastfeeding to a vocabulary that comes from the field of physics. 1 do this because good positioning really is all about extension, torque, angles, vacuum, and gravity. It is helpful for new mothers to understand the physical laws of science are causing the breastfeeding difficulty and it is not an emotional response or rejection of nursing from the baby.
