George A. Straniero, AFC Cable Systems, Inc. Executive Committee Members-at-Large 2008-2010 Mark R. Hubert, State of New Hampshire Bureau of Electrical Safety and Licensing; Michael J. Johnston, National Electrical Contractors Association. Victims of fatal fires in homes with working smoke alarms were more likely to have been in the area of fire origin and possibly severely injured very early in the fire's development, to have had a physical or mental disability, or to have tried to fight the fire themselves than victims of fires in homes without working smoking alarms. In partnership with the Fire Department of New York City, The Fire Protection Research Foundation, and Polytechnic University in New York, NIST and the U.S. Fire Administration are conducting experiments to develop an improved understanding of wind-driven fires and examine a variety of tactics to mitigate the hazards of firefighting under wind-driven conditions.
