Broadband concerns give academic IT departments major headaches. With thousands of undergraduates trying to download music, movies, and possibly complete textbooks, the strains on the computer infrastructure and attendant costs, not to mention the potential of intellectual property violations, IT reacts by limiting access. Productivity is another issue. If you've got real business reasons for using social media tools it's time to document these and present your case to IT to gain special dispensation for the library or information department. Classic time management techniques, such as "handle a piece of paper only once" and prioritizing tasks, easily adapt to the online work. Prioritize how and when you respond to emails and to social media. Managing social networking tools is half time management and half technology management. The bottom line is to ask yourself what has the most impact for your work environment and spend your time there.
