Visions of a Wireless Philadelphia

It's been 8 years since former Mayor John Street and former chief information officer Dianah Neff made the announcement that Philadelphia would be the first major wireless city in the US. But several problems popped up along the way. EarthLink released a statement indicating that costs to complete and operate the network in the city would likely be $20 minion instead of the $2 minion that was originally proposed. Perhaps the problem is that Philadelphia tried to go wireless and have it all at little to no cost. City officials realized that in order for the city's Wi-Fi to work, they would have to fund the operation and offer it to residents, just like any other municipal service.
