Building the "city of the future" has been a grand vision for futurists throughout history, whether to realize a utopian dream, like the Amana Colonies in Iowa, or to achieve some societal goal, like Japan's science cities that aim to accelerate technological advancement. Now in China, a new vision of the city of the future aims to create a model for building socially nurturing habitats that are, first and foremost, environmentally sustainable. A new metropolis, Dongtan, will be built on the island of Chiongmin in the Yangtze River near Shanghai, eventually providing homes and jobs for half a million people. Dongtan is intended to be a model for building sustainable cities all over the world, so developers anticipate that millions of people will want to tour the living eco-lab.
