  WORKSHOP BACKGROUND

Alan’s workshop like so many of his programmes operates at different levels. Not only does it
provide a refresher course for all busy Key Stage 2 staff in schools about grammar, punctuation
and spelling as aids for effective written communication, it also addresses the challenges of
teaching their use to young children growing up in a world of visual images and texting. What’s
more, Alan reveals how the teaching and learning of grammar, punctuation and spelling can be
  fun!

  WORKSHOP SCOPE

Effective written communication involves ‘joined up writing’ which requires of the writer some
understanding of sentence structure, variation and linkage. As a writer she must also
appreciate the role and function of her reader and the critical need to help the reader savour the
full meaning of her words (correctly spelt and phrased) through the subtlety of emphasis and
timing effected by the appropriate use of the tools and rules. Alan’s workshop does all this and
more - particularly by throwing light on stylistic differences between fiction and non-fiction
  writing sentence types.

  Please note:
This workshop makes direct links with the end of Key Stage 2 SAT mark scheme – we cannot predict what the
longer piece will be but we do know that paragraphing, range of connectives and broad range of sentence types
will form part of the mark scheme. Alan demonstrates how to tackle these areas across the Key Stage.

                                  WORKSHOP PROGRAMME
                                        Thursday 17th June 2010

   9:00 Coffee and Registration

9:30 Session One: ‘Sentence Types’ – Making Sentences Exciting
Alan begins the day by introducing his ‘broad range of sentence types’ approach. This draws on
his latest book ‘Making Sentences Exciting’ (Creative Educational Press) released this year. His
unique ‘Make it simple – make it stick’ strategies will be explored. Links will be made to Band A5
in the Key Stage 2 SAT ref ‘length and focus of sentences varied’.
   10:45 Refreshments

   11:00 Session Two – Connectives & Paragraphing
In this session Alan explains his physical reminder approach to connectives as well as his
‘contextualised connective’ posters. Further practical strategies such as ‘show not tell’
         paragraphing will be introduced.
   12:15 Lunch

1:15 Session Three: Developing Punctuation Use
Alan suggests a range of practical ideas for developing punctuation including his ‘comic transfer’
approach to speech marks as well as games for developing use of commas and full stops.
Reference will be made to Alan’s new ‘Ghost Story Plot Skeleton’ book (co-written with Julie
Barnfather). The use of pictorial symbols to develop speech punctuation and spelling types will
be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to use elements of the book prior to its
release. Games to develop vocabulary and spelling will demonstrate engaging ways of helping
pupils to enjoy this aspect of literacy.
   2:15 Refreshments

   2:30 Session Four – Effective Non-Fiction Writing
The last session explores Alan’s approach to non-fiction (Nash Pollock 2002) and how this helps
pupils write a broad range of sentence types in a non-fiction context.
