                                       Schedule of Events
                                       January 14, 2009 Update

The Alaska State Society is looking forward to celebrating with our fellow Alaskans and
friends of Alaska at several special events during the week, and we look forward to
seeing everyone!

There is a lot of confusion about what’s happening so we describe what we know this

There are three different “branches” or types of organizations involved with the Inaugural and the
Alaska-related events. First the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies
(JCCIC) is responsible for all events held at the U.S. Capitol—meaning anything that is held on
the capitol grounds—which is primarily the swearing-in of the Vice President and the President.
The JCCIC is a committee consisting of six leaders of the House and Senate established by a
congressional resolution (SCR 67, approved by Congress in Feb., 2008). Sen. Dianne Feinstein
(D-CA) chairs the JCCIC. Each state’s delegation is responsible for distributing tickets to view
the swearing in. The opportunity to request tickets is now closed If you don’t receive tickets,
don’t worry because there will be plenty of other worthwhile activities in which to participate,
including the parade and the balls.

The second official piece or “branch” is the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), which
is charged with organizing “off campus” events for the 56th Inaugural. A PIC is formed every
four years after the general election. The 2009 PIC is co-chaired by William Daley, Penny
Pritzker, John W. Rogers, Jr., Patrick Ryan and Julianna Smoot. Emmett Beliveau, who served as
the Obama campaign's director of advance, is leading the day to day running of the PIC. The PIC
is in charge of the parade and the official balls, with the support of the armed services (AFIC) and
numerous agencies that coordinate security. There are many unofficial – many quite famous –
balls that are already scheduled; they are different than the ones organized by the PIC. This year
the ten (10) “official” balls are by invitation only. http://www.pic2009.org/content/home/

The Alaska State Society (AKSS), or the “third branch,” mindful of the Presidential Inaugural
Committee’s schedule, will be hosting several events. Below is a rundown of what we have
identified as “Alaska Events” in addition to a number of events hosted by JCCIC and PIC but
please keep checking the AKSS website http://www.alaskastatesociety.com/. (We’ve also
attempted to list so of the other unofficial balls and functions. Please see addendum to this
       schedule for those we identified.)
