					                        HARBOR 2010 JOB OPENINGS:
                                      Position Description
Position Title:            Harbor Office Technician

Organizational Unit:       Small Boat Harbor

Working Conditions:        Temporary: 37.5 hours a week, Schedule varies, weekends,
                           Non-exempt

Reports to:                Harbormaster and senior harbor officers

Supervises:                No Employees


Under supervision the harbor office technician is responsible for the selling and scheduling of harbor
services, receipts payments, answers phones and responds to public inquiries.

Time          Essential Duties and Responsibilities

60%           Customer Service

              Sells harbor services, i.e. moorage, storage, electrical, boat lifts, grid, showers, etc.
              Schedules boat lifts and grid use. Receipts payment and balances cash drawer daily.
              Explains harbor procedures and tariffs to customers and potential customers.

              Answers phones, responds to public inquires, performs reception duties.        Maintains
              message board.

              Maintains harbor moorage, storage, grid and electrical logs and files.           Updates
              computer files daily.


40%           Facilities Operation

              Responds to marine radio calls and dispatches information to the appropriate agencies.
              Performs vessel and storage inventory and reads meters. Performs other duties as
              assigned. Works cooperatively with other employees, other departments, external
              agencies and the public.


Education: High School diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license.

Experience: Experience in boat harbors is desirable.

Knowledge: Skills and Abilities:

   Requires clerical experience and knowledge of office functions. Requires attention to detail
    necessary for accurate and complete records. Requires organizational skill for accounts, billing
    and invoices. Requires computer familiarity to retrieve necessary vessel information. Requires
    good interpersonal skills.

   Requires boat handling skills, thorough knowledge of boat moorage procedures and ability to
    accommodate many vessels properly. Requires the ability to recognize potentially hazardous
    situations and to contact appropriate persons as needed. Requires skills needed to conduct
    routine maintenance, repair, cleaning and construction.

   Knowledge of marine regulations as prescribed by the US Coast Guard and the State of Alaska

   Requires willingness to perform various job related duties, as situations require a strong sense of
    teamwork and ability to work cooperatively with others.

   Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to
    lift heavy objects and walk and stand for long periods of time; ability to communicate orally and in
    writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand and follow
    written and oral instructions.

Under supervision the harbor technician is responsible for the security, maintenance, repair and safe
usage of the harbor facilities.

Time          Essential Duties and Responsibilities


40%           Safety & Security
              Performs routine harbor patrols for securities purposes to maintain clear fire lanes,
              resolve vessel problems and encourage voluntary compliance with harbor regulations.
              Assists other departments when necessary. Respond to marine distress calls and
              dispatches
              information to appropriate agencies.


50%           Maintenance and Operation
             Assists vessels in distress by pumping, towing, replacing lines and using a fire
             extinguisher. Monitors and performs routine maintenance on all harbor facilities such as
             docks, floats, electrical systems, grids, navigation lights and buildings.        Keeps
             bathrooms and other public areas clean. Monitor supplies and provides information
             necessary for purchases.


10%          Teamwork & Cooperation
             Performs other duties as assigned. Work cooperatively with other employees, other
             departments, external agencies and the public.

                                       Other Harbor Positions

The Valdez Harbor is accepting applications for the positions of Harbor Technician, Launch Attendant
and Laborer. Under supervision, harbor technicians and laborers are responsible for the security,
maintenance and safe usage of City of Valdez waterfront facilities. Applications submitted will be
used to establish a hiring list from which qualified candidates may be selected throughout the summer
season. Rate of pay is $13.62 per hour. 37.5 hours per week. Applicants must hold a valid Alaska
driver’s license and be available to work evenings and weekends. Applications and job descriptions
