                                Vocabulary Activities
Explanations, Examples and Non-Examples:

“When the Crows raided our village, the others were ready to retreat, but your father was
the one who returned.” Raid means an attack for the purpose of taking property. If any
of these are examples of someone raiding, say “raid.” If it is not an example of raiding,
remain silent.
-cleaning out your neighbor’s refrigerator and eating all of their food
- the boys taking over the basketball court from the girls during recess
-shopping at the mall
-stealing your classmate’s school supplies from his desk
-helping your teacher collect the students’ homework assignments

“Returns Again was a man who could sometimes understand the speech of the animals
and the birds. Slow, too, inherited some of his father’s gift.” Inherited means received
something from an ancestor, so this means Slow got his ability to understand animals
from his dad. If any of these is an example of something someone has inherited, say
“inherited.” If it is not an example of something someone inherited, remain silent.
-having brown eyes and curly hair like your grandfather
-getting a book from the library
-buying a new outfit from the mall
-getting a necklace for your birthday that your great grandmother wore
-having a great singing voice like your mom

“At the age of ten, Slow killed his first buffalo…Though he was still called Slow, no one
teased him any longer. His name now meant determination and courage to those who
knew him.” Determination means the quality of being firm in carrying out one’s plan.
If any of these are examples of determination, say “That’s determination!” If it is not an
example of determination, remain silent.

-finishing a 5 paragraph essay in one night, even though it was very difficult
-Michael Phelps winning 8 gold medals for swimming in the Olympics
-rushing on the FCAT just to get finish quickly

brave and wise.” Respect means feelings of admiration and approval. If any of these is
an example of someone showing respect, say “That’s respect.” If it is not an example of
someone showing respect, remain silent.
-being loud and obnoxious while your teacher is teaching
-following the rules and listening while your teacher is teaching
-standing up for your friend when a bully is bothering him
-holding the door open for an older lady
-making fun of your friend behind her back

strongest of the boys.” Reputation means what others think about the character and
behavior of someone. If any of these situations would give you a good reputation, say
“I’d have a good reputation.” If it is a situation that would not give you a good
reputation, say “I’d have a bad reputation.”

of triumph or victory, say “Triumph!” If it is not an example of a triumph, remain silent.
