Cultural Identity Poster Project
Unlike many countries, Canada does not have one culture; instead, we have a multicultural,
multiracial character. The purpose of this assignment is to have you research your own cultural
heritage; where your ancestors originated and how, when and why they came to Canada. Your
finished project should be mounted on a regular piece of Bristol board and include the following:
1. A description of your country of origin and the circumstances leading up to your
ancestors’ emigration from that country to Canada (i.e. persecution, famine, lifestyle
change, employment opportunities, etc.). This is the historical aspect of the project.
2. A description of problems encountered after arriving in Canada (language, customs,
climate, financial difficulty, clothing differences, etc.), and how these problems were
overcome. You may need to do some library research if your family can’t provide the
information.
3. A list or description of customs and/or language still used or observed in Canada as part
of your tradition (ceremonies, observed holidays, language used at home, traditional dress
or food, etc.) These can be considered Canada’s links to other countries.
4. Photographs or diagrams of articles that are meaningful to your heritage (designs,
clothing, recipe for traditional food, etc.).
5. A prediction for what parts of your culture that will continue into the future. Will you
learn the language? Will you prepare certain foods (or learn to)? Which of your values
will continue to your own children or family? Which won’t? Why or why not?
You may need to do some research to determine the dates of your ancestors’ arrival to Canada ,
however much information can be gleaned from your parents and grandparents – please ask for
their help! List your sources of information at the bottom right corner of your project.
Below is a checklist for you to follow. Evaluation will be on the basis of the attached rubric.
