(Provided for Air Package participants only.) Day 2 Ennis Upon arrival, transfer by motorcoach to Ennis and the historic The Old Ground Hotel. (Transfer provided for Air Package participants only.) Excursion: A Medieval Tower House. En route, stop at Knappogue Castle for a tour of this beautiful 15th-century edifice. Local Flavor: Enjoy a traditional Irish breakfast at Knappogue Castle. Independent Exploration: The remainder of the afternoon in Ennis is at your leisure. This evening, attend a Welcome Reception and Dinner at the hotel. Day 3 Ennis & The Craggaunowen Project Educational Focus: The History of Ireland and County Clare. The Celts, Romans, Vikings, Anglo-Normans and British have all left their mark on Ireland and County Clare. Trace the epic events staged in this corner of the storied Emerald Isle. Excursion: Enchanting Ennis. Step back into the 13th century during a walking tour of medieval Ennis. See the remains of the Franciscan Friary with its echoes of early monastic life. Inside, explore Creagh Tomb where carved alabaster panels depict scenes from the Passion. Excursion: Forts and Feats. At the Craggaunowen Project, glimpse into a chronology of recreated Irish settlements, including a unique crannóg, or lake dwelling. Also view the replica of St. Brendan's leather boat that was used by Tim Severin in 1976 to re- enact the monk's sixth-century Atlantic crossing. Day 4 The Burren & The Cliffs of Moher Excursion: Limestone Landscapes. The Burren is one of the earth's most unusual topographies. Named from the Irish word bhoireann, meaning ''a stony place,'' this stunning plateau rose from the sea to become a site of great mystery and allure. Admire the subtle beauty of its diverse flora, natural karstic formations and man-made wonders. See the famous six-ft.-tall (1.8 m) Poulnabrone Dolmen, called The Hole of the Sorrows. A tour of the Burren Centre recounts the history and geology of this unique region. This afternoon, travel to the towering Cliffs of Moher. From atop their vantage point 700 ft. above the ocean, marvel at panoramic views of the Atlantic. Local Flavor: A local restaurant hosts you for a lunch featuring Irish specialties. Educational Focus: Meet the People. Learn about the modern lifestyles of the Irish during an enjoyable evening of conversation and mingling with some local Ennis townsfolk. Day 5 County Clare Educational Focus: Irish Roots. Learn about the Great Famine, a tragic event that spurred mass emigration. Today, nearly 40 million North Americans trace their roots back to Ireland. A representative from the Clare Heritage Centre will discuss the practical aspects of ancestry research, offering valuable advice on how to trace your own Irish roots using the many genealogical sources available. Excursion: Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. Step inside the most complete medieval castle in Ireland, trimmed with ornate tapestries and priceless works of art. Then, stroll among a schoolhouse, doctor's residence and various merchant buildings while costumed docents provide insight into life of bygone days in a recreated 19th-century Irish village. Local Flavor: Lunch is served at the park. Educational Focus: Music & Dance. Watch a lively performance at Cois na hAbhna, a cultural center where traditional Irish music and dance are preserved and celebrated. Afterward, kick up your heels during an opportunity to join set dancing lessons! Day 6 The Aran Islands Excursion: Inishmore. En route to Rossaveal, travel through the rugged natural beauty of the Connemara region and see why it has inspired writers for centuries. Embark on a cruise to Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. Here, you'll encounter the postcard imagery of ancient Irish structures as you pass by prehistoric forts, megalithic tombs and the remains of stone churches. Walk up to the ruined cliff-side fortress of Dún Aengus for breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. Local Flavor: Lunch is served at a local restaurant in Inishmore. Day 7 Coole Park & Thoor Ballylee Educational Focus: Ireland's Treasured Literature. Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, W.B. Yeats and James Joyce are world- renowned literary masters. Examine the environmental and societal conditions that cultivated a prolific body of Irish poetry and prose. Excursion: In the Footsteps of Yeats. Once home to Lady Gregory, a lifelong friend of W.B. Yeats, Coole Park is a sprawling expanse of seven wooded areas, peaceful trails and a walled garden. Its idyllic atmosphere inspired much of Yeats' poetry. Although the house no longer stands, one important highlight does remain¿the copper beech that has been etched with the initials of Yeats and many other Irish notables. Enjoy lunch in the tea rooms before continuing to nearby Thoor Ballylee, the summer home that Yeats' lovingly restored. Visit the 16th-century tower rising from the banks of the Cloon River that now showcases an interpretive center focusing on Yeats' life and works. Educational Focus: Shanachi Sagas. Become rapt in legend and lore as regaled by an authentic Irish storyteller. The oral practice of shanachi preserved Irish traditions during the dark years of illiteracy. Day 8 Ennis Independent Exploration: The day is free for you to pursue individual interests. Tonight, join your fellow travelers at a Farewell Reception and Graduation Ceremony followed by a Farewell Dinner at the hotel.
