Gauch shares the many lessons she learned from various writers and illustrators she has worked with as a children's book editor. Among others, from Ed Young, she discovered the importance of freedom in the artistic process; of encouraging the artist to let go in order to give inner visions outer textures; of establishing an environment in which the inner artist can range freely, seizing on stories wherever he is, in whatever medium he discovers, however nontraditional. She laments that these great artists have profoundly expanded her vision of what art was and could be, and most important, they taught her about the real power of art and where that power comes from.
