In order to answer a performance analysis question comprehensively, it is important to take a four-step approach that focuses on the structure of your answer; the time you allocate to each part of it; the calculations; and your commentary. A comprehensive analysis of performance will cover the following four areas: profitability, liquidity, gearing and stock market ratios. Before you start preparing any calculations, make sure you set up these four headings focus your attention on the main areas that must be addressed. When it comes to the calculations, use all the information you are given build up a comprehensive picture. Learn the formulas carefully. It is difficult to score well for sensible comments if you present incorrect figures.
