Foreword
Iam a firm believer in the phrase, “Success has many
fathers.”
In order to be successful in life or business, one must
make numerous contacts on the journey. As a second
year wide receiver with the New England Patriots in 1983,
I quickly realized that I needed to meet as many of the
team’s important corporate partners as I did loyal fans.
I volunteered to attend team corporate events for two
consecutive years and met the top business leaders in New
England. I was developing a networking ability that would
shape my future business career. Volunteering to attend
those events ultimately led to a job recommendation years
later for my current position. I am a national level sports
executive, and I use my networking skills every day.
But how does one network in corporate America if one
is shy or lacks confidence in conversations? Trish Rubin’s
xi
Trish Rubin’s New York Minute
launch book in her business communication series, The
New York MINUTE TM, highlights Event Networking, and
provides the answers to this question. The New York
MINUTE TM supplies a variety of high power tools to stoke
your networking fire. The New York MINUTE TM provides a
savvy, fast-paced method to score at event networking. I
see it as a must read book for every employee and every
boss who aspire to master networking skills for profitability.
In reality, a “New York MINUTE TM” is about 50 sec-
onds! That’s about how much time you have at corporate
events to get to know someone and to make a lasting
impression.
It has been said in life that, “Man doesn’t plan to fail,
but he fails to plan.” In every facet of your life, develop
a plan, including one for networking! That means now for
every business person who wants to be profitable.
The New York MINUTE TM
is your personal game plan
for success at networking events. Grab this book, devour
the Sixty Second Tips, spend a Moment with the Masters,
and think about how your New York MINUTE TM style can
turn networking into profit. I believe it will power you on
the right track for event networking success and beyond.
Get off the bench and get in the network game. Do it
in a New York MINUTE TM.

Your Minute with a Master
Are you ready to net WORK??
Ron Thorpe
“To me, networking works best under two conditions. First,
it’s always about the work. The reason you network is
because you’re trying to find like-minded people who care
just as deeply as you do about the shared mission that your
work involves. To make things the most interesting, the
work shouldn’t overlap directly, but enough so that there is
a chance for new capacity to be built for all parties. The
second condition has to do with your willingness to give up
some turf, and to make a sincere effort to understand what
the other party needs and brings to the table. If you believe
in that and act that way, and if your partner does too, the
chances that the networking actually will lead to something
valuable are high.”

The
M
in the
MINUTE
MEANS….
Make a
Meaningful
Start!
Ways to gather data for
networking confidence!
“M” is your first power move in Event
Networking. As you begin to use the frame-
work, think of this image… an octopus on roller skates!
Wait a New York MINUTE TM, that image is danger-
ous! You want to build a solid foundation as you start
building networking skill. Do you want to appear that
way at an event?
Of course not!
The image suggests lots of activity and plenty of
motion, but nothing productive. The octopus isn’t mak-
ing progress!
3
Trish Rubin’s New York Minute
Think of each flailing octopus arm with a business
card tucked into it. The octopus wants to mix and min-
gle at the event, wants to spread those business cards
around the room, but is thwarted by frenetic energy. Find
a new image as you develop Event Networking confi-
dence. Be thoughtful, not frantic. Cover your bases, not
just GROUND! See the end of the session when you’ve
connected to the right client, not just a warm body in a
business suit! Networking takes energy. Build it deliber-
ately. Create a unique relational personality with brilliant
skill. “M” stands for gathering meaningful data to make
connections BEFORE you attend the event. This can be
done quickly and effectively using any combination of
the “Networking Challenges,” “Sixty Second Tips” and
the “Meaning Minutes.”
Event Networking Challenge One
Use the Networking Challenge to launch your
thinking about making a meaningful start:
Bid farewell to the octopus, and say hello to an
image of reason and wisdom. Choose your own
image and write it below. Thinking metaphorical-
ly helps empower your view. How do you want to
appear to others? Ask a friend what kind of ani-
mal she/ he thinks you are as you “hunt” in a big
room for the right client. Are you a cheetah of

communication or a lion of opportunity!? And
think carefully… no networking bunnies…please!

MAKE Meaning…
in a New York MINUTE TM
“The speed of a runaway horse counts for noth-
ing.” Jean Cocteau
With this quote in mind, carefully imagine your net-
working image. It’s not enough to be fast. Be smart!
How does it feel to be the networking cheetah or the
wise, sage owl? Whatever your image, own it after
hours as you go on the networking trail. Reflect on the
relational skills that are part of that image.
See yourself in the mirror before you go on the hunt!
Build your confidence. Think of how others will see you
in this image. Remind yourself of that animal. Buy a

visual and keep it in sight! “Wear” the image to your
office. That consistent image will help you relate to new
confidence, new work, new contacts, new friends…and
new respect!
Sixty Second Tips to Make
a Meaningful Image
You’re going to a function: a reception, a luncheon, or
breakfast meeting. Do some quick HOMEPLAY. That’s
fun homework that is empowering! Prepare to network.
Ready yourself to go into a large room to make small
talk for big results! Follow these tips before you attend
an event to build your power in meaningful quick ways.
Following each MINUTE tip is a workspace …a
Meaning Minute. The improvement of any skill is based
on reflection…The Inking of your Thinking. So, reflect!
Stop and take a quick note, or “ink” a meaningful
thought, jot a reaction, an idea or a question. This guide
will become your unique call to networking action. In
addition, you’ll hear the voices of some powerful New
York Networking Masters throughout the book. These
are mini-coaching sessions for the reader. The Masters of
Networking will help you feel capable and confident!
6
Make a Meaningful Start
Feed your networking habit with content, content, con-
tent. Search for meaning in texts of all sorts. Read the
business resource publications, newspapers, web-
sites and e-zines for a quick minute each day. Get
data from online newspaper sources. Stay current.
Quickly scan these sites. Look for events to attend
while you keep yourself current with pop business
facts. Sites like BoingBoing.org and YouTube.com,
for example, have a great mix of business and culture
“blasts”. Set up key words for search engine daily
“alerts”. Be a sponge and soak up content.

Be super selective about attending events or dele-
gate to a buddy. Divide and conquer with friends to
cover ground. Keep a few business cards from your
closest associates ready should you see a chance to
promote them at an event you are attending. “Why, I
just happen to have her card here!” is a great way to
further connect people. A good networker is a cata-
lyst who builds currency connecting others in the
network. Spend a minute or two on your email regu-
larly connecting to events with colleagues and dele-
gating coverage so your connectivity grows.
