The apple didn't fall far from the tree, says Mark Hawkins, CEO of Riverside, CA -- based Altura Credit Union and CUES' chairman of the board for 2008. Hawkins' dad, Waymon "Ben" Hawkins, was a credit union "lifer," if ever there was one: He was the president/CEO of Teachers Credit Union South Bend, IN, from 1962 until his retirement in 1987 and served on the institution's board of directors until his death in late 2002. Hawkins says his stint at Taper Lock EFCU was a great introduction to how credit unions work and why they do some of the things they do. For the next decade, Hawkins acted as the EVP of the credit union, which currently has $1.1 billion and more than 123,000 members. Hawkins sees a bright future not only for Altura CU, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, but other credit unions and CUES as well.
