Since ancient times there has been an understanding that older persons differ physiologically from younger persons and are affected differently by disease processes. This has led to numerous treatises over the centuries highlighting the different physical, psychological, and social needs of older persons. The knowledge base in these texts has eventually led to the foundation of the modern specialty of geriatrics (Morley, 2004).
