Vice-Admiral Sir George Vallings KGB, secretary of the institute from 1987 to 1995, died in his sleep on Christmas day after a long illness. He was 75. Vallings' management style helped to lay the foundations of the successful institute CIMA is today. He joined the institute after a distinguished career in the Senior Service, having latterly been flag officer for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Members and staff have described him as a name instantly recognized with affection and respect and "such a genuine man and a great chum.
