In an interview, Howard Orme, deputy finance director-general, The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), talked about his role and his career. Orme runs the group finance team and is responsible for progress on how DWP handles 700 million payments and also for getting overpayments back in, from advising ministers on policy to forming strategy over banking contracts. At Unilever he was exposed to many different departments in order to learn the business, so he thought he may as well do an operational job for real and learn about it that way. He had spent almost three years in London as a management accountant responsible for a portfolio of companies in Asia, from Japan to the Philippines and Indonesia, and then he relocated to Brazil with his family. He returned to the UK to do a stint in investor relations and then became SVP of strategy and information in the home and personal care business.
