A chilling report on a deadly bacterium that is infecting military service members who have been wounded in the Middle East was the centerpiece of the annual February 2008 issue of Proceedings, a journal published by the U.S. Naval Institute. Some physicians speculated that bacteria residing in the combat zone had settled onto the skin of troop members and lay dormant until open wounds allowed the organisms to create havoc.
