Description: The third section, "Etiological Mechanisms," largely focuses on the neurobiological correlates of psychopathy. Waldman and Rhee review twin and adoption studies, as well as important methodological issues associated with externalizing conditions to help clarify the genetic by environment underpinnings of psychopathy. Minzenberg and Siever present a mechanical discussion of the neurochemistry and pharmacotherapy of externalizing conditions. In contrast, Raine and Yang provide a strong chapter reviewing the evolving research on structural and functional neuroanatomical correlates of antisociality and psychopathy, as well as associated features, with attention to the limits and implications of this line of enquiry. Rogers's chapter on the association between externalizing behaviours and frontal lobe dysfunctions adds little but brings attention to the limitations of neuropsychological measures. Blair provides a strong chapter linking psychopathy to amygdala dysfunctions, doing so convincingly by linking neurocognitive and applied/laboratory research. Studies linking psychopathy to deficits in attention, language, and behavioural inhibition are well summarised by Hiatt and Newman. Farrington provides the only psychosocial perspective, a noteworthy review of potential familial, extrafamilial, and protective factors associated with the development and course of psychopathy, with conclusions anchored in data from the Cambridge prospective, longitudinal study of delinquency. This section also includes a concise chapter by Frick and Marsee, who make a strong argument for developmental precursors to adult psychopathy, with attention given to the advancements in the understanding of externalizing problems in youth resulting from the investigation of callous-unemotional traits. MacDonald and Iacono conclude this section with a critical review of the methodological limitations inherent in these areas and suggest crucial points to be addressed before this line of research can cla
