Description: ICBA continues to work on a wide variety of legislative issues that concern community bankers. ICBA and 37 state banking associations continue to promote the Communities First Act to reduce the regulatory and tax burden on community banks and their customers. Several beneficial tax relief measures will be reversed or left to expire unless Congress works proactively to preserve them. ICBA will continue to work closely with the US Treasury Department and Congress to help ensure the best tax policy outcome for community banks. ICBA continues to lobby Congress to take its time and consider all potential ramifications before granting expanded powers to credit unions. A series of congressional hearings led to the introduction of legislation by Rep Carolyn Maloney that would severely limit the ability of community banks to offer overdraft protection programs. ICBA aggressively opposed this measure when the Financial Service Committee scheduled it for consideration.
